World Suicide Prevention Day 2025: Changing the Narrative on Suicide

September 10, 2025

Suicide is a serious global public health issue, with more than 700,000 lives lost each year. Its impact reaches far beyond individuals, affecting families, communities, and societies. Stigma remains one of the biggest barriers to recovery and support.

This year’s theme, “Changing the Narrative on Suicide”, calls on individuals, communities, organisations, and governments to foster open, compassionate dialogue. By talking honestly about suicide and sharing supportive messages, we can break down barriers, reduce stigma, and create a culture of understanding.

The HSE National Office for Suicide Prevention (NOSP) has identified five key messages to guide this year’s awareness campaign:

  • Reach Out and Check In

  • Your Words Matter

  • Be Safe Online

  • Let’s Talk About Suicide

  • Know Where to Get Help
