Alcohol, Drugs and their Impact on Young People’s Mental Health Leaflet

Alcohol, Drugs and their Impact on Young People’s Mental Health Leaflet

This short leaflet is designed to help parents and carers in Cavan and Monaghan talk with their young person about alcohol, drugs and mental wellbeing. It explains why young people may use substances, how the brain continues to develop up to around age 25, and why this makes them more vulnerable to the effects of alcohol and other drugs. The leaflet also reflects local insights, including how accessible young people say substances can be and the growing concern about alcohol availability within the home, reinforcing the important role parents play in shaping attitudes and behaviour.

Alongside clear information on risks, the leaflet focuses on strengths, resilience and practical action. Parents are offered guidance on setting boundaries, communicating expectations, staying involved in their young person’s life and talking openly about stress, emotions and decision-making. A detailed list of local and national supports is included – from youth mental health and addiction services to crisis counselling and helplines – and parents are encouraged to contact their GP if they are worried or unsure where to turn. The leaflet will be available through community services, schools, partner organisations and online via Cavan Monaghan Connects, making it a useful starting point for families who want to protect and promote their young person’s mental health.
