Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in Ireland, and most cases are caused by UV radiation from the sun or sunbeds. UV damage can happen even on cloudy days, and it builds up over time. Following safe sun habits is one of the most effective ways to protect your skin and your family’s health.
The HSE’s SunSmart campaign promotes the 5 S’s:
- Slip on protective clothing;
- Slop on broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen (SPF 30+ for adults, SPF 50+ for children);
- Slap on a wide-brimmed hat;
- Seek shade—especially between 11am and 3pm from April to September; and
- Slide on wraparound sunglasses with UV protection.
These steps, along with checking the daily UV index, can greatly reduce your risk of developing skin cancer.
The guidance also includes clear advice on avoiding sunbeds, understanding your personal skin cancer risk, and protecting vulnerable groups such as children, outdoor workers, and those with fair skin or weakened immune systems. It also highlights that everyone—regardless of skin tone—needs to protect their skin from UV exposure.
