SunSmart for Farmers is a health awareness initiative from the HSE and Healthy Ireland, designed to help farmers reduce their risk of skin cancer by protecting themselves from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Farmers are exposed to two to three times more UV rays than indoor workers, making skin protection a crucial part of everyday farming life.

The campaign explains that UV rays—not heat—cause skin damage and increase the risk of skin cancer. It encourages farmers to follow the SunSmart 5 S’s:

  • Slip on protective clothing,
  • Spread on sunscreen (SPF 30+),
  • Slap on a wide-brimmed hat,
  • Seek shade during peak UV hours (11am–3pm), and
  • Slide on UV-blocking sunglasses.

Practical tips include scheduling outdoor work to avoid peak UV exposure, applying sunscreen 20 minutes before going outside and reapplying regularly, wearing long sleeves and hats, and performing regular skin checks to detect changes early. Early detection greatly improves treatment outcomes, so farmers are urged to contact their GP promptly if they notice unusual skin changes or new moles.

The campaign offers leaflets, posters, and online resources, helping farmers integrate these protective measures into their daily routine. This proactive approach supports the wellbeing of rural communities and promotes safe, sustainable farming practices.
