Released in July 2024, “Suicide and Self-Harm Content on Social Media Platforms: Tips and Tools for Safe and Sensitive Communication” was produced by the Social Media Sub-Group of the HSE Resource Officers for Suicide Prevention (ROSP) Learning Community of Practice, with support from NOSP. The 26-page booklet explains:
-
Why language matters – how respectful, stigma-free wording can open safe conversations and reduce contagion risk.
-
When and how to intervene – step-by-step advice for responding to posts from someone who may be in crisis.
-
Post-vention guidance – sensitive approaches to online memorials, celebrity deaths and community responses.
-
Self-care reminders – practical strategies for professionals and volunteers processing difficult content.
-
Extensive signposting – national and local supports, policy references and further training links.
Written in plain English, the guide is aimed at anyone moderating, posting or sharing content— from community practitioners and teachers to parents, youth leaders and social media managers—empowering them to promote hope and help while minimising risk.
