Explore the HSE’s Free ‘Balancing Stress’ Online Programme to Support Mental Wellbeing

November 19, 2025

The HSE has unveiled Balancing Stress, a free, easy-to-access online programme designed to support people in managing the common stresses of daily life. The initiative was officially launched on 2 May 2025 by Jennifer Murnane O’Connor TD, Minister of State for Public Health, Wellbeing, and the National Drugs Strategy.

The six-part programme features self-directed video sessions of approximately 35 minutes each. These cover core topics such as managing anxiety, worry, low mood and relationship stress. All sessions are available online without registration and can be viewed at any time on a phone, tablet or laptop.

Speaking at the launch, Minister Murnane O’Connor emphasised the importance of accessible tools for wellbeing:
“Stress is a part of life and it can have a profound impact on our health, our productivity and our relationships. This new HSE online programme offers people across Ireland practical and evidence-based tools to manage stress effectively and enhance their mental wellbeing.”

The programme is delivered by Dr Niamh Clarke, HSE Principal Psychologist, and includes expert contributions from Professor Alan Carr of the UCD School of Psychology. Across the six sessions, participants are guided through practical exercises, evidence-based strategies, meditations and real-life examples to help build resilience.

Dr Clarke highlighted the value of the resource, noting:
“The ‘Balancing Stress’ programme provides clear, practical strategies backed by scientific evidence to help people not just cope, but thrive.”

The programme forms part of the HSE’s commitment to preventative and accessible mental health supports, complementing existing services across the country.

Key features of Balancing Stress include:

  • A comprehensive curriculum delivered through six 35-minute sessions

  • Evidence-based content drawing on CBT and Positive Psychology

  • Practical tools, guided exercises and expert interviews

  • 24/7 accessibility with no registration required

  • Free access for everyone in Ireland

The programme was developed by HSE Health and Wellbeing in collaboration with HSE Psychology. Additional supports, including posters, leaflets and a podcast episode dedicated to Balancing Stress, are also available.
