Many men find it difficult to open up about mental health challenges or emotional struggles. Research shows that men are less likely to seek counselling and are, unfortunately, more likely to die by suicide — with 8 in 10 suicide deaths in Ireland being men.
The HSE, in partnership with MyMind and other providers, offers a range of free and confidential supports to encourage men to reach out for help early.
Talk Therapy and Counselling Supports
One of the key supports available is talk therapy, which can help men process difficult emotions, develop coping tools and better understand what they’re going through. Talking to a professional can make a significant difference to mental wellbeing.
Men can access:
-
6 free online therapy sessions through MyMind – available with a GP referral code.
-
Low-cost and private counselling (no referral required) for ongoing support.
-
Confidential phone support through Connect Counselling, offering immediate emotional support and information from trained therapists.
How to Access Support:
-
Speak with your GP, who can provide a referral code for six free online therapy sessions via MyMind.ie.
-
Visit yourmentalhealth.ie/men for a full list of free and low-cost services available.
-
Contact Connect Counselling for confidential phone support and guidance.
Why It Matters:
Accessing support — even for a short time — can make a real difference to how you feel. Talking to someone trained to listen can help you understand your situation, manage stress, and find ways to cope more effectively.
