International Women’s Day (IWD) is recognised worldwide as a time to celebrate the achievements of women and to reflect on the ongoing work needed to achieve gender equality. First observed in 1911, the day has grown into a global movement that highlights progress while also shining a light on the challenges that remain.
The 2026 theme from UN Women — “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls” — emphasises the importance of turning commitments into meaningful change. It calls for stronger action to remove barriers that prevent women and girls from accessing justice, safety, education, and equal opportunities.
These barriers can take many forms, including discriminatory laws, weak legal protections, and harmful social norms that limit the rights and wellbeing of women and girls. Addressing these issues requires collective effort from communities, organisations, and governments.
Across Ireland and around the world, communities mark International Women’s Day through conversations, events, campaigns, and acts of recognition that celebrate women’s contributions in families, workplaces, and communities. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the importance of supporting women’s wellbeing, leadership, and participation in all areas of life.
For communities across Cavan and Monaghan, the day provides an opportunity to recognise the vital role women play in strengthening families, services, and community networks. Supporting women’s mental health, safety, and access to resources remains an essential part of building healthier and more inclusive communities.
The International Women’s Day campaign theme #GiveToGain encourages people to consider how supporting gender equality benefits everyone — strengthening communities, improving wellbeing, and creating a fairer society for future generations.
People are encouraged to learn more about the campaign, support local initiatives, and take small actions that contribute to equality, respect, and inclusion.
