Samaritans Monaghan Encourage Community to Reach Out for Support This Christmas

December 10, 2025

As Christmas approaches, Samaritans in Monaghan are encouraging anyone feeling overwhelmed, isolated, or under pressure to reach out for support. The charity’s volunteers will continue to provide a confidential listening ear 24/7 during the holiday season, when other services may be closed.

During December last year, Samaritans volunteers across Ireland responded to more than 30,000 calls and emails, with over 800 contacts made on Christmas Day alone. Many callers shared concerns relating to mental health, loneliness and isolation, family or relationship pressures, bereavement, and challenges with alcohol or drug use. More than 130 volunteers were on duty during the day, a level expected to continue this year.

Margaret Fahey, Branch Director of Drogheda/Monaghan Samaritans, highlighted the emotional strain some people feel at this time of year. She said:

Christmas is seen as a happy time for people, but for others it can be quite challenging. Bereavement, loneliness, relationship and family problems, abuse and drug and alcohol misuse can feature heavily in some homes. Parents can also be struggling with financial pressures and the expectation to appear happy. Samaritans is a charity that prevents suicide through the power of human connection, and providing that human connection is crucial for many of our callers at this time of year.

Longest Night – 21 December

Samaritans are inviting businesses, community groups, and local landmarks to take part in The Longest Night on Sunday 21 December, the Winter Solstice, by lighting up in green to show solidarity with people experiencing their darkest moments. Members of the public are also encouraged to light a candle at home and share images on social media to raise awareness using #SamaritansLongestNight.

Last year, several sites across the county supported the initiative, including Monaghan Civic Building, alongside national buildings, hotels, colleges, and community organisations across Ireland.

Local Awareness in Monaghan Shopping Centre

Monaghan Samaritans will also host an awareness stand at Monaghan Shopping Centre on Sunday, 21 December, offering an opportunity for members of the Cavan–Monaghan community to meet volunteers and learn more about the charity’s work locally.

Vera O’Brien, Deputy Director Monaghan, expressed gratitude to those who have supported the campaign over the years.

“We really want to thank anyone who has supported Samaritans’ Longest Night campaign as it’s vital that we spread the message that we are there for everyone during the long dark winter nights. We encourage anyone who needs support this Christmas not to struggle alone. We are here, 24 hours a day, on freephone 116 123.”

Anyone can contact Samaritans free of charge, at any time, from any phone on 116 123. The number does not appear on phone bills. Email support is also available at [email protected].
