World Maternal Mental Health Day takes place on Wednesday, 6 May 2026. This international campaign raises awareness of mental health difficulties during pregnancy and in the year after birth.

This year’s campaign theme is See, Listen, Support.

The campaign encourages families, services and communities to recognise that many mothers may be struggling quietly and may not always ask for help. Up to 1 in 4 mothers experience maternal mental health difficulties.

  • See the struggles mothers may not speak about, and help reduce stigma around maternal mental health.
  • Listen openly and kindly, so mothers feel heard and emotionally supported.
  • Support mothers through kindness, connection and access to the help they deserve.

The campaign is asking people and organisations to share messages on World Maternal Mental Health Day and during the week of 4–8 May 2026.

You can help by:

  • sharing campaign messages on social media
  • talking openly and kindly about maternal mental health
  • signposting mothers and families to trusted information and supports
  • helping mothers feel seen, heard and supported

Campaign resources, podcasts and videos are available at www.motherhood.ie.

Maternal mental health difficulties are common and support is available. If you are worried about how you are feeling, speak to your GP, midwife, public health nurse or another trusted health professional.

If you or someone you know is at immediate risk, call 999 or 112, go to your nearest Emergency Department, or contact your GP.
