Whether it’s a short stroll around the block, a longer walk in a nearby park, or a group walk with friends and neighbours, National Walking Day is a chance to reconnect with the outdoors and boost both mental wellbeing and physical health.
Communities across Ireland are encouraged to celebrate by organising walking events, such as guided tours of local parks, neighbourhood walks, or family-friendly rambles. It’s also a chance to share the experience with others online. Everyone is invited to post photos and stories of their walks using #WalkHikeRunPushRoll, helping to inspire more people to join in.
This year’s celebrations feature a special video with Sligo Community Training Centre trainees Nicole and Lorelei, along with tutor Janell Carew. All three are daily walkers and passionate advocates for the benefits of walking – their story is sure to motivate others to get moving.
National Walking Day takes place within National Walking Week 2025 (22nd – 28th September), now in its 6th year and part of European Week of Sport. Organised by Get Ireland Walking, the week highlights the many benefits of walking for body and mind, and provides opportunities for people to come together, explore their communities, and celebrate the outdoors.
Organisers of local walking events are encouraged to register their walks via the Get Ireland Walking website. Registered events are covered by free insurance, with a maximum group size of 50 participants.
