Suicide is a serious global public health issue, with more than 700,000 lives lost worldwide each year. Its impact reaches far beyond individuals, deeply affecting families, communities, and societies. Stigma remains one of the greatest barriers to treatment and recovery, often leading to isolation, discrimination, and increased risk of suicide.
The theme for World Suicide Prevention Day 2025 – “Changing the Narrative on Suicide” – calls on individuals, communities, organisations, and governments to play their part in tackling stigma and fostering greater understanding. Every conversation, no matter how small, has the potential to save lives and strengthen support for those in need.
The HSE National Office for Suicide Prevention (NOSP) is highlighting five key messages for this year’s campaign:
-
Reach Out and Check In – Small connections can bring hope and make a real difference.
-
Your Words Matter – Speak with kindness and empathy when talking about suicide.
-
Be Safe Online – Share responsibly and help create supportive online spaces.
-
Let’s Talk About Suicide – Build your skills to spot signs and support others.
-
Know Where to Get Help – Be aware of local and national supports.
